Bio Snapshot
Retired, as of Feb 1, 2019. Used to be a programmers specializing in custom software for research projects (worked at the University of Michigan for 32 years), but now I am just another techie looking for a creative outlet for that "itch to make stuff".
Been "disconnected" since covid started. Time to return? Not sure.
Project Ideas
These are my current active projects, in various states from idea only to test implementations (nothing is ever finished); listed, roughly, in priority order:
- Mapping roads with bicycle-mounted bumpy-road detector. A combination of GPS and accelerometer data collection with the intent of creating local maps of road-roughness with respect to bike riding. Notes: Bicycle Bumpy-road Mapping
- Flowerpot moisture-sensing and watering system. So far, just played around with the moisture sensing part.
- Interactive LED vest. So far, just played around with LED strips (WS2812B) and IR proximity sensing.
- Room Temperature network. A few initial prototypes (1) XBee (for network) and temperature sensors (DS18B20), (2) swapping temperature sensing (DS18B20 - also does humidity - probably a better fit to problem), (3) collecting data on Raspberry Pi with web interface for harvesting logs to a database on info server. Also, some preliminary stabs time-based graphing using the database.
- Robot "car" - playing around with the "standard" hobby platforms like the Elegoo Smart Robot Car Kit - trying to build one from scratch, but ran into the limits of my knowledge in fabrication.
