Zone updates

Bicycle Shop

  • Broken cart has been repurposed as a shelf.
  • Zone infrastructure now takes up less than 8 square feet, leaving more room to work.
  • Looking to make the space supplies cabinet more accessible and find a better home for the paint/stain cabinets.

CNC Zone

  • Steve and Drew have been working hard getting the CNC Router tweeked in from the nice rails upgrade Steve gave it and they have been setting it up to be more user friendly for the training.
  • Thad has downloaded the Makerspace version of VCarve and is selecting the project with Steve that will be used for training.

Craft Room

Sewing

  • Embroidery machine is at the repair shop. At this time he should have all parts needed. The machine was sent initially without the power cord. The repair guy does repairs on location and jobs like ours on the side, so we're at the mercy of his available time and workload. In the future, I may try a different repair tech who works on domestic machines in the repair shop location. (ie, regular day job)
  • The Babylock serger will be back repaired if we decide/have funds for the $400-500 repair. It needs a major system rebuilt.

Injection Molding

  • Had 3 people in the class in Oct. and they seemed to enjoy it.
  • Jim Kemp's First Robotic tank tread project is moving along nicely as he has molded over 8,000 treads in the last 6 weeks. He and his students are working on a funding campaign for tooling the balance of the plastic robot parts. The prototype tank is in the CNC Zone for those who would like to look at it.
  • Minecraft characters are coming along and recently the ones with glow in the dark eyes have been a big hit. The eyes are molded separately and the head is machined out to fit the eyes in. They are molded from an alloy of basically a Nylon/Strontium Aluminate mix for 10-12 hour glow times.

Kiln Zone

  • Pallet rack over the kilns is moved, no longer a fire hazard

Laser Zone

  • Both lasers are up and running again.
  • I'm thinking about increasing the usage cost from $0.20/min to $0.25/min to account for increased maintenance costs as the machines age.
    • Thoughts? Would this increase be terrible or reasonable?
    • I'm thinking it would go into effect on the first of the year.

Media Lab

  • Since last meeting, the hole in the Media lab was covered with drywall and primed. Final painting will be this weekend.
  • Food for thought: There has been a little talk about the 3D scanner living in the Media Lab, rather than the Fab Lab. This makes sense since it requires the nvidia GPU on the PC in the Media Lab. But it also requires space. If we had a fold out table as a place to use the 3D scanner, which door in the Media Lab would you rather it temporarily block?
  • Sorry I couldn't make it, this is the only time I could vote! -Robert

Tool Crib

  • The Ryobi power tools that Nate has generously loaned to the space have gone home.
  • The plan is to replace them with more Milwaukee

Welding Zone

  • The zone was reorganized during Potlock. Please tell us if you have any opinion about the changes, or ideas for the future of the zone.
  • No classes are currently scheduled. Poke the slack channel if you want a class to happen.
