Are we willing to allow exceptions to be made to the current closure of i3?
Several members of leadership have followed up with various organizations and the net result is no clear answers.
- Every other makerspace in Michigan that responded is allowing their space to be used for medical equipment with strict limits. - We have gotten in touch with a variety of state and local officials. Most of them either passed us along to someone else, refused to comment on individual cases like ours, or said they didn't know, either. Other responses are listed below:
"Got in touch with some sort of representative on the Michigan Covid Hotline, they were rather confident and insistent that the AG and governor's office will not grant us permission given we are in the eyes of the state "a communal hobby shop" her words not mine, and that we should be instead encouraging our community to work from home instead of traveling to make PPE for healthcare professionals" (from Thomas)
Jan got an email from the hotline email which was forwarded to the memberlist. It linked us to a webpage with guidance. Evan pointed out they define the following as essential businesses: "* Manufacturers, technicians, logistics and warehouse operators, and distributors of medical equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), medical gases, pharmaceuticals, blood and blood products, vaccines, testing materials, laboratory supplies, cleaning, sanitizing, disinfecting or sterilization supplies, and tissue and paper towel products"
From the Hamtramck police log: "Officers gave a formal warning to a Jos Campau business for being in violation of the Governor’s Executive Order regarding Essential Businesses. Advised if another incident happens a citation will be issued."
We can continue to request further guidance from the state, but there is no guarantee that it be clear and specific and not contradict other guidance. Everything is a little chaotic at the moment.
The real question is - do we take our chances by allowing people to make a good faith effort to comply with the regulations while using the space and be prepared to shut down immediately if any authorities decide to ask us to? Or do we decided that any risk is too high and continue to forbid all work at the space?
Under what rules are we willing to allow exceptions to be made to the current closure of i3?
