Show and Tell
- Lew is working on Halloween signs that Mike thinks look like paddles. Lew says the handles are too short.
- Aisha has a ring from the stone setting class last weekend, made with sterling silver and a pretty purple and gold stone
Old Business
- Just a reminder that the board is appointing or reappointing zone coordinators and officers for the next year, at the October board meeting. Two self nomination surveys have gone out to the zone coordinators email for current zone coordinators, and a call for zone/officer volunteering went to the entire member list. If you're a zone coordinator, be sure to return the current zone Coordinator survey by the board meeting so we know who wants to continue and if help is needed, etc.
- If you want to indicate interest in coordinating) helping a zone or would like to be an officer, we're looking for responses to the call for volunteers survey. Do it! Before the next board meeting (Which is soon! Tuesday, October 9!).
Camera Policy Vote
POC: Mtfurlan (talk) Now that we discussed it on the mailing list, there are two things to vote on.
Step 1: Cleaning it up, and fixing issues.
This is the important thing, it closes loopholes, fixes wording, and overall makes it match reality and the intentions of the original policy.
This is the new proposed policy: https://github.com/i3detroit/i3-rules/blob/9cbc0023776f5c9201d9d58023afcd8448ec3d4f/cameraPolicy
Diff: https://github.com/i3detroit/i3-rules/compare/fixingCameraPolicy
- Qestion: does this cover phone cameras?
- Jody: No, that's just ettiquite, this policy covers installed, always recording cameras
- Charlie: does not like the "Any member may view real-time security camera footage when at i3 Detroit" part.
- Mark: This doesn't really change current policy
- Charlie: It gets rid of the "With istruction from the Infrastructure Coordinator" and wants to make sure the second proposal is passed first.
Step 2: Jamie has a separate proposal to change the rules on how members can view live footage.
Diff: https://github.com/i3detroit/i3-rules/pull/4/files
Proposal:

New Business
Expansion/New Building Exploration Committee
- Lew: is there any progress on this?
- Mel has been dealing with bank crap but is working on that end.
- Paul has been looking at real estate and has some places to follow up on.
- Lew: 6000 square feet just opened up down the street
- Jody: We're already at around 7000 square feet.
Upcoming Events
- Paul listed a lot of things. See the Calendar at [1]
- Reminder from Mel: Halloween party is November 3, soon after Potlock. Mel and Jan are taking point on the party. We'll also likely be hosting the Michigan Makers Meeting during the day before the party.
- We may also be hosting 'Tech Shop Orphans' at the next Potlock.
Zone updates
CNC Zone
- One new member is in the authorization process and a prospective member is ready to begin asap. When these two are authorized it will bring the total to 14 new authorized users in the past 12 months.
- The new "one on one" training/authorization process seems to be working well and moving more people through the process. It gives the new person 100% hands on training so interest level stays up. Training is averaging five, 2 hour sessions to get a user authorized. Experienced people get through in 2 sessions and complete novices can do it in 6 or 7 sessions.
- Steve is upgrading the wood router with more precision type rails. After this upgrade is complete we'll be testing new software from VCarve. This is an industry standard software package for running CNC routers and is very user friendly. This should reduce the training time for this machine and make it more accessible to the membership. An authorization procedure will be developed using this software.
Craft Room
- The Badger airbrush should be available again after missing parts for a long time. We have new bottles for it. Four are available, the rest are on reserve. Do not treat these like consumables. Which means, rinse them out when you're done and put them back with the airbrush so others can use them. Do not leave them in the sink to collect science experiments. If you must keep one for your use or lose it, please reimburse the craft room box $2 each.
- New Hot Steam gravity fed iron is on the wiki. It's not up for use yet, but the instructions are posted, so familiarize yourself.
Electronics Lab
- More cabinets, more drawers!
- Thank you to the helpful MF's who take care of a lot of little issues
- The last zone orientation was well attended, thank you to all who came
- Possibly a big cleanup coming for Potlock, stay tuned...
Injection Molding
- Wed, October 17 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm Injection Molding Class - Description: What to do when the rest of the world agrees with you and wants your latest "wow that is cool thing" you have designed and 3D printed.....but you can't keep up with demand. Sign up link to Eventbrite is on the calendar.
- Jim Kemp has molded over 1,000 of the tank treads for the First Robotics EKGAR Kick Starter project to be run later this year. (EKGAR = Every Kid Gets A Robot) This mold presented several challenges and we are excited to see it running so well! A prototype of the robot is in the CNC Zone.
- Today was a big day for inspecting the large molding machine. It was molding parts but a couple of the internal mechanical pieces will need to be refurbished and the nozzle replaced to make it a smooth running machine. Once it is running smoothly with the current controls, Jim Kemp will build the controls. Mara Furland generously donated a Raspberry Pi and touch screen!
Jewelry Zone
- Our Sunday class was very successful. I actually had a person that thought they can just show up without registering. We have had a lot of people inquiring about the classes as well. We are planning another class soon. This class will be a sterling silver wire cuff that will be textured with a stone. We are going to make it a two day class. We already have four people interested by just talking about it. We have two i3 members from the class asking if we can sell sterling silver as a consumable. This way more people can get material and work on projects faster. Are area is being used more often now and more people are noticing are area.
Kiln Zone
- Yasmine: I just started using the pottery wheel in this zone. Was not able to find bats for the wheel (circle things you make your pots on, that make it easy to remove and save pieces that you have made). I looked online and they range from 6-20$ per bat- it would be useful to have a few. It is possible to make them- maybe someone can help laser cut/3D print/injection mold some? Also, would be nice to have a surface for wedging (kneading the clay). Depending on the style they are about $60. These are also possible to make- would need help from wood shop. Let me know. Also, who do I contact for authorization on running the kilns- seems like there is no zone coordinator..
- Mel: There isn't a coordinator for ceramicsnow , but if someone were to want take that on, the kiln zone does have some funds available for use. *Hint Hint*
Laser Zone
- Both lasers continue to be mostly working right, with occasional bugs.
- Had a well attended first training session last Thursday.
- Charlie: Have we looked into recent developments in laser technology/new shinies we might be interested in, because our lasers are pretty old.
- Mike: Have looked around, there are definitely better machines that wouldn't really expand our capabilities but should be more reliable, but are also quite a bit more expensive than our current machines.
- Mel: we've looked at some match grants from Michigan Economic Development.
Media Lab
- If anyone's interested in photography, video editing, etc, and has ideas, post in the #Media_zone slack channel.
Vinyl Zone
- Thanks Nate B for fixing the heat press!
- Vinyl zone is currently saving up funds for a new vinyl cutter with features like optical registration. Let Charlie know if you have other features in mind.
Welding Zone
- Big shelving reorg coming at Potlock. Extra hands appreciated.
- In order to prevent floorspace creep, will be anchoring the zone with a shelving unit over large project storage.
- Everything seems to be working well.
SIGs
U of M SSW Project
- PoC: Vivian
- The University of Michigan has finalized the relationship between i3Detroit and the School of Social Work. There will be one student initially who will come to i3Detroit to shadow members in "making". As we get closer to the date of the visit, I will post a schedule and zone information on what the student might want to participate in. If there is any interest in providing some Maker instruction in a particular zone, please email, text, or slack me with your information.
- I will be complete with the lesson plans and other materials for the student over the next two weeks. It is important to make sure that the student is working on "maker" skills that he or she can deploy in a Detroit Public School through "MakerRoom".
- Future plans: To create "MakerRoom-Flint" in conjunction with The University of Michigan Flint.
- Kevin is still a little confused
- "MakerRoom" is a pilot program for Detroit Public Schools to get social workers a better understanding on "Making" and gain skills to take that knowledge out to communities.
- Paul so we basically treat them as another member, answer questions, etc?
- Vivian treat them as a guest. They'll be here as Vivian's guest, there's no obligation expectation that anyone has to help or train them, but it is very much welcomed.
